The Chief of Ngleshie Lafaa Barima under the James Town Stool of the Greater Accra region, Nii Ayi Okufuobour I, has asked former President John Dramani Mahama to concede defeat in the interest of peace.
The Chief said although the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns over the results, they have to let go.
Nii Ayi Okufubour I, speaking in an interview with this paper said it is painful to lose an election but in the interest of peace and unity, John Mahama must accept defeat and move on.
The NDC leader at a Press Conference said he cannot accept what he described as “Fiction” electoral results declared by the Electoral Commission’s Chairperson.
He said the people of Ghana voted for change and as a strong believer in the principles of democracy, he is not ready to allow will of the people be stolen.
“We will not accept anything short of a declaration of the legitimate results which points to an NDC Parliamentary majority,” Mr Mahama said.
He said there was no “doubt Ghanaians from every region of this great nation of ours, voted for change, and we did so in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. I’m a staunch believer and experiment of democracy, a system of governance that allows the ultimate decision-making power to rest in the hands of you, the good people of Ghana.”
The NDC has embarked on a series of street protests nationwide to express concerns over what they say is a flawed election.
Nii said, the incessant press conferences of the opposition political party and claims that they have won majority in parliament are needless because the body in charge of managing the elections have declared the election in favour of the sitting President and there is nothing that can overturn the will of the people.
Nii urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop the street protests and to resort to the law courts to have its electoral grievances resolved, entreating the NDC leadership to take a cue from what the NPP did in 2012.
Nii who also doubles as the Asafoatse for Weija said the protests by the opposition NDC have caused some discomfort for the general public as well as the governing party because of its security implications.
Nii advised the leadership of the NDC to speak to their followers to stop what he described as the needless demonstrations.
Touching on the attack on the media by the NDC, Ni described the attacks as unnecessary and unwarranted, he said the NDC are behaving like because that same that called that projected the elections in 2012 and called on them to respect the media, he said he is not surprised about his conduct now since he did same in 2012.
Pressure has been mounting by sections of the Ghanaian public on the former President and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama to concede defeat to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after losing the December 7th general elections.
People behind these calls on the former President have reminded him that he signed a Peace Pact to ensure that there is peace before, during and after the elections and therefore this is time to walk the talk as a former President and a statesman.
