The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Apraku Twum Barimah, has commended the minister of Energy, Mathew Opoku Prempeh, for engaging American oil giant, Exxon Mobil in discussions that are likely to ensure their return to Ghana.
The return of Exxon Mobil into Ghana’s upstream oil industry, would deepen and boost investor confidence in the country’s energy sector and likely attract more heavy weights in the global oil industry to invest and create more jobs for Ghanaians, Paul Twum Barimah stated.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Paul Twum Barimah indicated that the country’s oil industry needs oil giants and majors like exon mobile with huge investments to keep investments flowing into the country and propelling economic growth, job creation and wealth distribution in the country and praised the Energy Minister for taking the bold decision to woo the energy giant back to Ghana.
Last week, the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, revealed that US oil giant, ExxonMobil had begun engagement with government in a bid to return to the country.
It will be recalled that in 2021, ExxonMobil exited the country’s upstream petroleum sector where it had successfully conducted exploration activities offshore after acquiring rights in 2018.The energy minister assured that government and exon mobile officials were making headway for a return.
“Exxon Mobil intends coming back to Ghana. Interestingly, we have already started talking because God didn’t put the oil and gas there for us not to utilize. If it means that we have to develop our skills and talent and do more carbon extraction, let us get on with it”, he disclosed this at the launch of the 9th edition of the Annual Local Content Conference and Exhibition by the Petroleum Commission, he stated “.
Exon Mobil’s investment was the first after a landmark ruling from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in favour of Ghana, following the maritime border dispute with Ivory Coast a year earlier.
