GhanaFest 2026 did not simply meet expectations, it shattered them. Under the dynamic leadership of President Effah Ameyaw, the Ghana National Council delivered a festival that was grand in scale, rich in culture, and unmatched in execution. What many had heard, what many doubted, became undeniable once witnessed: GhanaFest has evolved into the most influential Ghanaian cultural festival in the diaspora.

This year’s celebration drew an extraordinary lineup of dignitaries whose presence alone signaled the festival’s rising national and international stature. Hon. Akwasi Opong‑Fosu, Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Center, attended and left with one unforgettable verdict: Impressive. His admiration was so profound that he proposed a formal collaboration between GhanaFest organizers and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, to elevate the festival’s global reach.

Also in attendance were Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom and his wife, Yvonne Nduom, whose longstanding contributions to Ghanaian enterprise and diaspora advancement rendered their presence profoundly symbolic. Mr. Senyo Hosi, Executive Chairman of Kleeve and Tove and former CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, together with his wife, Gloria Hosi, infused the celebration with notable corporate gravitas. Nana Abena Oye Sempeh I, Okuapeman Ohio Kontihemaa, further dignified the festival with her regal authority and cultural stature.

Collectively, their presence affirmed GhanaFest’s ascendant relevance, not merely as a cultural showcase, but as an emerging economic and diplomatic platform for Ghana’s global identity.

Across social media, the reactions were electric. One attendee wrote, “I’ve lived in Chicago for almost a year now, but I didn’t expect to find this level of culture in the city. It felt like I was back in Ghana.” Another shared, “I had to bring my camera out to document the moment.” A father added, “My wife told me about this event, so you know I had to bring my son to experience this too.” And from dr_boatemaa: “It was my first time too! I was blown away!!” These were not mere comments; they were declarations of cultural pride and rediscovery.

Hon. Akwasi Opong‑Fosu’s keynote speech added intellectual depth to the celebration. He reminded the diaspora that Ghana’s identity remains strong across continents. He warned that political division threatens national unity and urged Ghanaians everywhere to reject intolerance and uphold the values that built the nation: integrity, discipline, respect, service, and accountability. He called for a restoration of values and a renewal of mindset, insisting that development without moral leadership is unsustainable.

He challenged the diaspora to transform Ghana’s “brain drain” into “brain gain,” noting that the expertise of Ghanaian professionals abroad is one of the nation’s greatest assets. He encouraged investment, innovation, mentorship, and partnerships that strengthen institutions and create opportunities for future generations. His message was clear: culture preserves identity, commerce creates opportunity, and together they build prosperous communities.

President Effah Ameyaw, in his presidential address, delivered a powerful affirmation of GhanaFest’s legacy. He reminded the audience that what began in 1988 has become one of the largest Ghanaian cultural celebrations in the United States. He highlighted the historic Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony on July 1, where the Ghana flag flew proudly over Chicago for the first time. That moment symbolized resilience, contribution, and recognition of the Ghanaian community’s decades of service.

He praised chiefs, queen mothers, affiliate associations, volunteers, sponsors, and partners for their dedication. He encouraged the youth to embrace their heritage, lead with integrity, and dream boldly. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to strengthening partnerships, supporting businesses, investing in the youth, and promoting civic engagement. His message was unity, purpose, and progress: regardless of ethnic background, political views, or religious beliefs, Ghanaians are one people with one destiny he proclaimed.

The festival itself was a masterpiece of organization and spectacle. The Fante Fancy Dancers dazzled with color and rhythm. Iddrisu Abdulai and the stilt dancers delivered gravity‑defying performances that left crowds in awe. The procession of affiliate groups became a vibrant contest of traditional songs, dances, and pageantry. Chiefs, queens, and their royal courts were in majestic Kente, gold ornaments, beads, and centuries‑old symbols of authority, transforming Washington Park into a living tapestry of Ghanaian heritage.

The Okuapeman Fekuw added a solemn moment by honoring the late Duke Agyepong, their Krontihene, whose sudden passing earlier this year left a void in their community. Their tribute was dignified, heartfelt, and deeply respected.

GhanaFest remained true to its multi-generational spirit. Children and youth filled dedicated spaces with soccer matches, traditional games, and laughter, demonstrating that culture is not merely inherited from history,it is actively lived and passed on.

The food stands were irresistible. The aroma of kelewele, waakye, jollof rice, kenkey and fish, kebab, fried yam, mashed kenkey and countless other delicacies filled the air. Some vendors attracted long lines stretching across the park as revelers waited eagerly for a taste of home. Traditional authentic arts and crafts vendors showcased carvings, jewelry, fabrics, and handmade treasures that reflected Ghana’s artistic brilliance. Corporate vendors and businesses also seized the opportunity to market their products, demonstrating the festival’s growing commercial relevance.

The Ghana Nurses Association of Illinois provided free first aid and health screenings, a service many appreciated. Meanwhile, the Ghana Passport and Ghana Card officers effort to process applications on-site but unfortunately, the process became frustrating for many due to incomplete online applications and a severe shortage of interviewers. One official admitted that only one interviewer stationed in Ghana was working remotely instead of the usual eight. A mother who drove from Nebraska with her four children arrived early, yet six hours later she still had no Ghana Card. Others who arrived at 9 a.m. were still waiting at 5:50 p.m. The process was described as chaotic and embarrassing. Officials on hand openly refuse interviews and lack name tags for proper identification. It was a blemish of an otherwise extraordinary festival.

The Nyansapo Band set the ultimate foundation for live musical mastery. Delivering an irresistible fusion of classic highlife melodies, sophisticated jazz undertones, and pulse-pounding polyrhythms, they captured the adults and vintage music lovers completely. The horns blared with precision, the bassline thumped through the park, and the rhythm section drove hundreds of dancers into effortless motion. Couples danced, elders showcased timeless footwork, and the entire crowd swayed in unison to a rich, nostalgic live performance that echoed the glorious golden era of Ghanaian live band music.

When the headline artist, Takoradi’s own Kofi Kinaata, took center stage, the energy in Washington Park reached an absolute fever pitch. The youth and the young-at-heart surged forward in an ocean of hands, cameras, and jubilation. Kinaata came alive with relentless energy, magnetic charisma, and infectious charm, delivering hit after hit with seamless vocal command. The crowd did not just listen, they sang every single line verbatim, turning the venue into a massive choir at times. From his witty lyrical anthems to his uplifting choruses, Kinaata had the entire audience jumping, dancing, and shouting in pure euphoria. The collective joy was palpable, transforming the park into a giant outdoor concert under the Chicago sky.

GhanaFest 2026 was proudly presented by PassportPay, serving as the headline sponsor. Their visionary support and commitment to the diaspora made this a monumental, historic celebration possible.

GhanaFest 2026 will be remembered not only for its cultural splendor but for its powerful call to renewal of nationality. It was a celebration of identity, a showcase of unity, and a reminder that wherever Ghanaians live, their hearts remain connected to home.

The Sankofaonline Editorial Board applauds President Effah Ameyaw, the Ghana National Council, and all participants for delivering a historic festival whose impact will resonate until we gather again.
