The Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) Sylvester Mensah has revealed that Ghana’s economy is on the brink of collapse if proper measures are not taken to manage the situation.
According to him, the economy is waiting for a click of the button just to crush due to the poor manner and ways that the present government led by President Akufo Addo has managed things.
The former Member of Parliament made the statement in an interview with Nana Akosua Konadu on the hard truth show aired on the Joynews channel on Tuesday. He noted that at the time that the NPP assumed office in January 2017, Ghana’s public debt was around GHC121 billion cedis. Just five years of staying in power, the NPP government has extended the debt portfolio to over 390 billion Ghana cedis, a situation that makes the NPP government a poor manager of the economy.
He claimed that the “NDC is a better manager of the Ghanaian Economy”. His statement “the NDC is a better manager of the Ghanaian economy” came up after the host posed the question of why the NDC were not able to manage the economy better.
“NDC is a better manager of the Ghanaian economy, when the NDC left power in January 2017 our total national debit stock was around one hundred and twenty one billion. Interestingly, our current national debt stock is in the range of Ghc 390 billon and so this current government has added well over two hundred and forty billion to our national debt stock” he said.
“Within the last four years of President Mahama, total revenue he had at his disposal to manage this country was around eighty six billion Ghana cedi’s ,within the first four years of President Nana Akufo Addo the total revenue they had at their disposal to manage this economy was in excess of a hundred and fifty six billon.”
“Under president Mahama, Ghana was getting about seventy thousand barrels of crude oil a day from our oil fields during our tenure we had work on the ten and Sankofa projects. Under president Nana Addo Ghana has been producing well over two hundred thousand barrels of crude oil a day from our oil fields but they are still unable to use the revenue prudently to manage the economy ”, he stated
“During the tenure of President Mahama and President Mills, they put together loans of about hundred and ten billon cedis within eight years and interestingly, within five years of President Nana Addo, Ghana has contracted well over two hundred and sixty billon cedis of loans.
Whereas the Mahama administration can point to several development projects in terms of health, education, markets, roads among others, this quantum of resource that we have received under the Nana Addo Presidency there is nothing to show for it “he added.
