The African Regional Journal (TARJ) has unveiled its prestigious 100 Inspiring Individuals 2026, celebrating an exceptional group of African business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, political figures, traditional rulers and development champions whose achievements are helping to shape the continent’s economic and social transformation.
The annual initiative recognises Africans on the continent and in the diaspora, alongside foreign investors and business leaders whose contributions have generated measurable impact through industrialisation, entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, job creation, governance, humanitarian service and sustainable development.
This year’s honours place particular emphasis on leadership that translates vision into tangible economic and social value.
Among the key criteria considered were business growth, employment creation, innovation, investment, tax contribution, social responsibility, transparency, accountability and demonstrated commitment to Africa’s development.
At the centre of this year’s recognition is African industrial giant Aliko Dangote, who was named TARJ Man of the Year in recognition of his transformative contribution to Africa’s industrialisation and his sustained investments in manufacturing, cement, petroleum, petrochemicals and agriculture.
Dangote’s recognition reflects the growing importance of African-owned industrial capital in reducing the continent’s dependence on imported products while creating jobs, expanding productive capacity and strengthening regional value chains.
- SINA GERARD: FROM FARMING VILLAGE TO INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS
One of the most compelling stories of the awards was that of Rwandan entrepreneur Dr. Sina Gerard, Founder and Managing Director of Urwibutso Enterprise.
Dr. Gerard received the TARJ Changemaker of the Year Award as well as the TWARM Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to agro-processing, entrepreneurship, employment creation and agricultural value addition.
His entrepreneurial journey, from a small farming community in Rwanda to the creation of a highly successful agro-processing enterprise, has become an example of how local enterprise can transform agricultural resources into globally competitive products.
Urwibutso Enterprise is associated with products including Akabanga Chili Oil, Agashya fruit juices and a range of other value-added agricultural products.
Speaking after receiving the honours, Dr. Gerard called for a fundamental shift in how international investors perceive Africa.
He urged investors to regard the continent not simply as a consumer market but as a strategic partner with enormous opportunities for long-term investment in manufacturing, agriculture, technology, infrastructure and skills development.
“When we process our agricultural products locally, we create jobs, increase incomes, reduce poverty and strengthen our economies,” he said.
Dr. Gerard also encouraged young African entrepreneurs to remain resilient and innovative, stressing that successful businesses should go beyond profit-making to create employment, strengthen communities and contribute to shared prosperity.
TOGBE AFEDE XIV RECEIVES GLOBAL IMPACT HONOUR
Ghanaian traditional ruler and prominent business executive Togbe Afede XIV was honoured with the TARJ Global Impact Award for his contribution to business development, investment and national leadership.
His recognition underscores the increasingly important role of visionary African leaders who operate across traditional leadership, business and development.
RUTO NAMED PAN-AFRICANIST OF THE YEAR
Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto was named TARJ Pan-Africanist of the Year, while Nigerian industrialist Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, CFR, CON, Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of BUA Group, received the TARJ Industrialist of the Year Award.
The honour recognises Rabiu’s contribution to industrial development and private-sector investment in Nigeria and across Africa.
Namibia’s President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was named TARJ Woman of the Year, while H.E. Fanny Chantal, President of Ecofepa, received the TARJ Amazon of the Year Award in recognition of her contribution to women’s empowerment and continental development.
AFRICA’S BUSINESS LEADERS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
The TARJ honours also recognised an impressive array of personalities from different sectors and countries.
Among the recipients of the TWARM Business & Leadership Awards were Sen. Saah H. Joseph, Political Leader of Liberia’s People Action Party, who received the TWARM Political Icon Award.
The award recognised his contribution to Liberian politics, his development interventions in Montserrado County and his humanitarian and educational initiatives.
Hon. Rosana Schaak, former Representative for District 1, Rivercess County, Liberia, received the TWARM Leadership Award in the Political Sector for her contribution to Liberia’s political landscape and her role in encouraging greater participation by women in politics.
Amb. Elaine Obukome Ibru-Mukoro, Chairman of Monarch Environmental Services & Ages Affairs Nigeria Ltd., was recognised as a Light bearer for African Women, highlighting her leadership across business, hospitality, entertainment, philanthropy and governance.
Kenyan entrepreneur Dr. Solomon Matheghe Kamenju, Chief Executive Officer of Enfrashas Investment, received the Emerging Entrepreneur Award for his growing contribution to Kenya’s commercial landscape across logistics, transport, finance consultancy, commodities and related sectors.
Amb. Dr. Victor E. Osadolor JP, President/CEO of Character Media Inc., Network International, received a Transformation Leadership Award for his work in human development, character reformation, motivational speaking, counselling and social advocacy.
Another recipient, Amb. Agnes Fortune-Cannon, Founder of the Global African Village Care Alliance, was recognised for her commitment to women’s empowerment and youth development across Africa.
- ROSETTE ALIU CHAMPIONS MADE-IN-AFRICA AGENDA
A major voice at the gathering was Ambassador Dr. Rosette Aliu, Convener of the TARJ Forum and Trade Fair.
Dr. Aliu identified insecurity as one of the major obstacles to Africa’s economic transformation, warning that food security and sustainable economic development would remain difficult to achieve if farmers continued to face attacks from criminal groups and bandits.
She called for stronger law enforcement, enhanced surveillance, accountability and renewed commitment to democratic governance.
Dr. Aliu also renewed her campaign for the promotion of Made-in-Africa products, announcing plans to establish a Made-in-Africa Mall in Abuja, Nigeria, before expanding the initiative to other strategic African markets, including Kenya, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa.
She stressed that stronger intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) would be critical to building stronger economies, increasing local production and strengthening African currencies.
ADCCI UNVEILS ONE AFRICA DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
One of the major business and development highlights of the gathering was the unveiling of the United Africa Initiative Limited under the African Development Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI).
The ambitious continental initiative seeks to create an integrated platform for industrialisation, innovation, entrepreneurship, trade and sustainable economic transformation.
At the heart of the initiative is an innovative programme aimed at improving cocoa fermentation and drying technologies in Ghana.
According to ADCCI, inefficiencies in post-harvest handling represent a significant challenge within the cocoa value chain, with the potential to reduce quality, farmer incomes and export earnings.
The Chamber believes modern fermentation and drying technologies can improve cocoa quality, reduce post-harvest losses, enhance value addition and strengthen Ghana’s position in the international cocoa market.
The initiative is therefore being positioned as more than a technological intervention. It is intended to become a strategic industrial-development programme capable of linking farmers, processors, technology providers, investors and export markets.
OADI TO DRIVE CONTINENTAL PROJECTS
ADCCI has established OADI as its implementation and development arm to coordinate strategic projects under a unified One Africa vision.
The initiative encompasses a broad portfolio of projects spanning commerce, agriculture, technology, education, tourism and cultural development.
These include:
- Made in African Malls – a continental marketplace designed to promote African-made products and strengthen intra-African trade.
- One Africa Conference and Trade Fair Centre – a platform for investment promotion, exhibitions, business networking and international trade.
- One Africa Resort and Leisure Park – an initiative focused on tourism, hospitality and leisure development.
- One Africa Agriculture Development Centre – designed to advance modern agriculture, agribusiness and food security.
- One Africa Innovation and Technology Centre – focused on research, innovation, technology and digital transformation.
- One Africa Education Centre – supporting education, skills development and human-capital development.
- One Africa Empowerment Centre – aimed at youth development, entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment.
- United Africa City Development Project, Abuja – a proposed integrated urban-development initiative.
- United Africa Agriculture Company Ltd. – designed to support agricultural investment and value-chain development.
ADCCI says the integrated model is intended to create an ecosystem in which agriculture, commerce, industry, technology, tourism, education and culture reinforce one another.
The cocoa fermentation and drying programme is expected to become one of the Chamber’s flagship interventions, with the ultimate objective of helping farmers produce premium-quality cocoa capable of attracting stronger market value while increasing Ghana’s foreign-exchange earnings.
AFRICA’S CORPORATE CHAMPIONS RECOGNISED
The awards also recognised companies whose operations continue to contribute significantly to Africa’s industrial and economic development.
Among the outstanding companies recognised were NNPC Limited, Dangote Group, Dangote Cement, Dangote Petroleum and Petrochemicals, Strategic Initiatives Limited, Zenith Bank Plc, Equity Group Holdings, B5 Plus Group, Engineers & Planners, Ethiopian Airlines and Dzata Cement.
The recognition reflects the central role of African corporations in expanding productive capacity, creating employment, driving innovation and deepening regional economic integration.
PARTNERSHIPS FOR A NEW AFRICAN ECONOMY
The programme also featured recognitions from partner institutions, including American Heritage University California and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Delta State, Nigeria.
Among those recognised through fellowship and Sustainable Development Goals-related awards were Dr. Sina Gerard, Founder and Managing Director of Urwibutso Enterprise; Dr. Olive Uwicyeza, Director of The College Foundation, Rwanda; Dr. McKelvin Ejeagha, Founder and Chairman of McKelvin Group, South Africa; Amb. Dr. Agnes Fortune-Cannon; and Amb. Dr. Rosette Aliu, Founder of the TARJ Forum and Trade Fair.
Other recognised figures included Ambassador Yamah Mohammed Musa Dsemobo, former Nigerian High Commissioner to Mozambique, Mauritius and Madagascar; Dr. Ofori Sarpong, CEO of Special Ice Company Limited, Ghana; and Mr. Evans Kwadwo Danso, CEO and Co-Founder of Flosell Limited, Ghana.
BUILDING THE AFRICA WE WANT
The organisers said the 100 Inspiring Individuals Initiative and the TWARM Business & Leadership Awards are designed not merely to celebrate success but to inspire a new generation of African leaders.
The underlying message of the initiative is that Africa’s transformation will depend increasingly on Africans who are prepared to invest, innovate, build industries, create jobs and develop solutions to the continent’s challenges.
The emphasis on industrialisation, agricultural value addition, intra-African trade, technology, governance and entrepreneurship also aligns with the broader ambitions of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and its vision of The Africa We Want.
From Dangote’s industrial empire to Sina Gerard’s agro-processing success, from Togbe Afede XIV’s business leadership to the emerging continental ambitions of ADCCI and OADI, the TARJ honours have placed African enterprise and leadership firmly at the centre of the continent’s development conversation.
More importantly, the gathering demonstrated that Africa’s next chapter cannot be built solely on the export of raw materials or dependence on imported goods.
It must be built on African capital, African innovation, African industries, African talent and stronger African markets.
That is the leadership challenge and opportunity captured by this year’s TARJ honours.
