Gold Fields Ghana has reiterated its confidence in its application to renew the Tarkwa mining lease, arguing that its continued operation of the mine offers the strongest guarantee for sustained economic growth, employment and community development, despite objections raised by sections of the Apinto Divisional Council.

In a statement issued on Monday, the company responded to reports suggesting opposition from some traditional leaders, saying such views do not represent the long-standing relationship it has built with host communities, traditional authorities and the Government of Ghana over the past three decades. It said it remains committed to open engagement through established consultation platforms.

The mining firm maintained that its operations at the Tarkwa Mine have delivered substantial economic benefits to Ghana, citing contributions through taxes, royalties, dividends, local procurement and investments in community development. According to Gold Fields, about 74 pesewas of every cedi generated by the mine is retained within the Ghanaian economy. The company also reported paying approximately GH¢5.8 billion in taxes and statutory obligations in 2025, while spending around GH¢8.8 billion on goods and services sourced locally.

Gold Fields further highlighted the impact of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, which it said has invested more than US$110 million in projects covering education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, water, sanitation and environmental conservation in its host communities.

On employment, the company stated that 99 per cent of its workforce is Ghanaian, with about 70 per cent of employees at the Tarkwa Mine coming from surrounding host communities.

Providing an update on the renewal process, Gold Fields said it formally applied to extend the Tarkwa mining lease in November 2025 before submitting a comprehensive renewal proposal to the Government in July 2026. The proposal, it explained, outlines measures to increase local participation, expand procurement opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and strengthen community benefits while supporting continued investment in the mine.

The company also maintained that its financial strength, technical expertise and operational track record position it to extend the mine’s lifespan while preserving jobs and delivering long-term value to both the State and host communities. It stressed that the lease renewal process is being conducted in accordance with Ghanaian law and acknowledged that the final decision rests with the Government.

Gold Fields concluded by reaffirming its commitment to responsible mining practices, environmental stewardship and ongoing dialogue with traditional leaders, community stakeholders and government as the lease renewal process continues.
