Sporadic gunshots rung in Samreboi, leading to the death of one and many injuries following reported attacks by goons from Akonta Mining, on workers of Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited in the western region.
In the attack, the Assemblyman for a neighbouring community, Bekwai Aboi, Thomas Andoh, who was present at the site, was also not spared. He was hit with sticks and machetes many times, people with knowledge about the incident stated.
Eye witness say the Akonta Mining goon-squad who had stationed in a bush around the premises of Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Limited emerged from the bush and amidst gunshots, ordered the driver conveying the workers who were on afternoon shift to the company’s premises; to stop and drop the workers.
No sooner had the driver slowed for the workers to drop than the assailants who are known Akonta mining security guards begun attacking the workers with machetes, and stabbed one (now confirmed dead), without any provocation.
The driver, who sped off when he saw the brutalities on the workers, is nursing wounds from the broken windscreen which was fired into by the goons.
Another truck carrying logs of timber was fired at leaving the tyre deflated after the driver who was also flagged to stop refused to do so.
As at the time of filing this story, reports filtering in indicated that security had been beefed up in the area.
It is not clear what sparked the attacks but the Municipal Chief Executive of Amenfi West municipal, Lord Nana Tandoh and the Divisional Commander, were at the scene of the incident when this paper scouts were leaving the scene.
