The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, yesterday announced a a-seven-member committee to inquire into the “IGP leaked tape” which bothers on alleged conspiracy to remove the head of Ghana Police Service, for failing to connive with some members of the ruling party to, among others, subvert Ghana’s democracy.
The committee comprises three members from each from both sides of Parliament and one technical person.
Announcing his formation of the committee to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claims contained in the leaked tape, Mr. Bagbin said while the Minority Caucus had furnished him with the names of three Members from their side, the Majority side was yet to submit their list of three members for the inquiry to begin.
It is also to make recommendations for reforms where necessary and make such other recommendations and consequential orders as the committee may deem appropriate.
The Speaker said the issues raised in the leaked tape have implications for the security of the country as well as the democratic dispensation, and that the inquiry would establish the veracity or otherwise of the claims.
The party official whose voice is heard on the tape is said to be the former Northern Region Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, who has denied recording the conversation.
For his part, the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, thanked the Speaker for forming the committee to look into the leaked tape issues and urged the Majority Caucus to submit the names of the three Members from their side for the committee to immediately commence work.
The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said his side had no option but to comply with the Speaker’s directive.
On Wednesday, 12th July, the Minority Caucus called for a full scale parliamentary inquiry into a leaked tape in which some alleged senior members of the ruling party and a top police officer were heard allegedly conspiring to remove the Inspector General of Police in order to rig election 2024 for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Deputy Minority Leader’s call was strongly supported by the Ranking Member on Defence and Interior, James Agalga, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South Mr Haruna Iddrisu as well as the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Mr Eric Opoku.
The audio recording captures voices of some top officials said to be with the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) discussing the IGP.
They are heard questioning the impartiality of the IGP, claiming he has the support of former President John Dramani Mahama, and so scheming to ensure the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The persons are, therefore, calling for his removal before the 2024 general elections.
