Information gathered has indicated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s representatives at the local level who finds themselves in mining areas are sabotaging and undermining the President’s efforts of fighting the illegal mining (galamsey) menace.
Although the President has taken several efforts to fight illegal mining activities in the country to salvage the environment, water and river bodies his efforts are resulting to nothing as the activities continue unabated.
A visit to communities like Adansi Akrokerri, Adumanu, Adokwai, Ayaase, and Bobriase, it has been established that there are illegal mining (galamsey) activities in operation.
Though government through the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations under the then Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal mining (IMCIM) launched the Community Mining Program in Adumanu, barely a couple of years ago to enable artisanal small scale miners engage in Responsible Mining
At Bobriase –Akrokerri and its surrounding communities, the galamsey activities have resulted in total pollution to the Pompo River in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti region.
Residents who spoke with the New Crusading Guide newspaper expressed worry about the development which they said the president must task the various state security services to the area to prevent the illegal miners from their operational activities.
The residents also said the Pompo River which has over the years been used by the churches for baptism has been polluted with harmful chemicals from the galamseyers.
This paper spoke with the traditional authorities in Pomposo about the development but they said the Pompo takes it source from Bobriase and its surrounding communities which mainly can be located in the Adansi north district but they, as traditional authorities cannot do anything about making the river regain its nature unless the illegal mining activities are stopped.
The District Chief Executive for Adansi north, Mr Eric Kwaku Kusi jnr. in a reaction after several efforts to reach him on phone denied any illegal mining activities in the Adansi north and said the activities of the miners is legal and that he knows those contesting the DCE position with him are those behind the plot just to tarnish his image and cause his removal from office.
When contacted the Regent of Adansi Bobriase, Nana Amakye Kai confirmed to this paper that the activities of the miners is illegal which the DCE, Mr Eric Kwaku Kusi jnr is very much aware because as regent of Bobriase, he made series of reports to the Fomena police command for the arrest of the illegal miners but they are still on site.
Nana Amakye Kai hinted that he made several efforts to get the galamseyers questioned over their activities but all yielded no results.
