Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Party in 2026, promising to unite, rebuild, and rebrand the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing the media and party faithful in Accra, Mr. Boadu said the NPP had reached a critical crossroad following its defeat in the 2024 elections, noting that the Party had “lost touch with key stakeholders” including the youth, middle class, and business community.
“The NPP has drifted away from many of the groups that once proudly carried our flag. We have lost our media relationship, our youth support base, and the confidence of the business community,” he stated.
Mr. Boadu, who served as the Party’s General Secretary between 2018 and 2022, lamented the challenges facing NPP members in opposition, including job losses and what he described as “punitive bail conditions” and intimidation under the NDC government.
He stressed that the only path to restoring hope and dignity for NPP supporters was to return to power. “The NPP cannot afford to stay in opposition for long,” he said. “But amidst these challenges, I passionately believe there is hope — not in rhetoric, but in restoration.”
A Call for Experience and Proven Leadership
Mr. Boadu emphasized that his decision to contest was based on his long experience and proven record in party management and election operations.
“At every turning point in a political party’s journey, a special kind of leader is required — one who has been tried, tested, and proven through years of service and sacrifice,” he said. “This moment in our Party’s history is not a time for experiments.”
He cited his over 30 years of service in various capacities — from polling station chairman and constituency secretary to national organiser and general secretary — as evidence of his deep understanding of the Party’s structure and strategy.
Achievements Under His Leadership
Highlighting his record, Mr. Boadu credited his tenure with several electoral milestones:
- The NPP’s highest-ever presidential vote of 6.7 million in 2020.
- The two highest parliamentary seat tallies in NPP’s history — 169 in 2016 and 137 in 2020.
- Introduction of a Pink Sheet Tracking System and rapid results collation within 6 hours during the 2020 elections.
- The establishment of monthly constituency subventions — the first in the Party’s history.
“These achievements are not coincidences; they are the results of hard work, experience, and tested leadership,” he asserted.
Five-Pillar Agenda for Party Renewal
Mr. Boadu outlined a five-point agenda for his chairmanship campaign:
- Reconciliation and Unity — Healing divisions and rebuilding trust within the Party.
- Rebranding the NPP — Restoring confidence and reconnecting with grassroots and middle-class supporters.
- Empowering Party Structures — Strengthening internal systems and ensuring effective communication and security.
- Sustainable Resource Mobilization — Establishing transparent and reliable funding for party operations.
- Reviving the Winning Machinery — Modernizing campaign strategies with digital tools, data analytics, and AI.
A Vision for Restoration
Mr. Boadu said his mission was to make the NPP “a people-centered, development-oriented political movement” ready to reclaim power in 2028.
“The 2028 elections will be one of the most critical in Ghana’s history. We cannot afford to gamble with leadership. What the Party needs now is experience, stability, and a leader who can unite all factions and restore the NPP to power,” he concluded.
He pledged to release a detailed policy document in the coming days outlining his roadmap for rebuilding the NPP and strengthening its electoral machinery nationwide.
