Tension is brewing within Kwahuman following a strong public statement issued by the Kwahu Akyeame Kuo condemning the presentation of Eugene Asante Boadi as “Kwahuhene” during President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to the Eastern Region.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Daasebre Kyeame Yaw Asante, spokesperson for the Kwahu Akyeame Kuo, the traditional spokespersons described the incident as “shocking, unfortunate, and highly provocative,” insisting that Eugene Asante Boadi is no longer recognized as the Paramount Chief of Kwahu.

The controversy stems from the official programme organized to welcome the president to the Eastern Region on Thursday, May 1, 2026, as part of his nationwide “Resetting Ghana” tour, where Eugene Asante Boadi was publicly introduced and acknowledged as “Kwahuhene.”

According to the Akyeame Kuo, such recognition amounts to a blatant disregard for the customs, authority, and established traditional structures of Kwahuman because the former chief was lawfully destooled in October 2024.

He Is No Longer Kwahuhene

The statement emphasized that since his removal from office, Eugene Asante Boadi, formerly known in traditional circles as Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, has neither participated in nor appeared at any official traditional function within Kwahuman in the capacity of paramount chief.

“As custodians and spokespersons of the traditions, customs, and authority of Kwahuman, we deem it necessary to state unequivocally that Eugene Asante Boadi was lawfully destooled as Omanhene of Kwahu in October 2024,” the statement stressed.

The Akyeame Kuo further maintained that Kwahuman does not recognize him as Kwahuhene and warned against any attempt by state institutions or political actors to impose him on the people of Kwahu.

The traditional authorities accused organizers of the presidential event and some state officials of permitting what they described as a “grave misrepresentation” despite widespread public knowledge of the circumstances surrounding his removal and the ongoing legal proceedings before the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

Allegations That Led to Destoolment

The statement revisited the allegations that culminated in the former chief’s removal from the Kwahu Paramount Stool in 2024.

According to the Akyeame Kuo, Eugene Asante Boadi was destooled over allegations of extortion, conflict of interest, and conduct deemed disgraceful to the image and dignity of Kwahuman.

The statement referenced earlier media reports by Graphic Online and the Daily Graphic dated October 14, 2024, which alleged that while serving as board chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), he was accused of receiving bribes and other sums of money from a businessman seeking a loan facility from the bank.

The allegations reportedly triggered widespread concerns over reputational damage, corruption, and abuse of office, leading to his resignation from the bank’s board position.

According to Nananom and kingmakers of Abene, his conduct betrayed the trust reposed in him and brought the revered Kwahu Paramount Stool into disrepute, eventually resulting in his destoolment.

“Calculated Affront” to Kwahu Authority

The Kwahu Akyeame Kuo described the latest development as a direct attack on the dignity and authority of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

“Nananom Kwahu Traditional Area views this development as a calculated affront to the authority, dignity, customs and established traditional structures of Kwahuman,” the statement declared.

The group issued a stern warning to all individuals and institutions allegedly involved in the incident, including elements within government, the Eastern Regional Minister and the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

According to them, the chiefs and people of Kwahu will fiercely resist any effort to reintroduce or impose Eugene Asante Boadi as Kwahuhene “under any guise whatsoever.”

The statement reiterated that the chiefs of Kwahu remain resolute in protecting the integrity and authority of the Kwahu Paramount Stool and would not allow the customary will of the people to be undermined.

Call for Restraint

The Akyeame Kuo further appealed to the government of Ghana, state institutions, political actors, and the media to exercise restraint and respect traditional protocols and judicial processes currently underway.

They warned that actions capable of inflaming tensions or disturbing the peace and unity of Kwahuman should be avoided.

The statement comes at a time when chieftaincy disputes continue to generate public debate across several traditional areas in Ghana, with many observers calling for greater sensitivity from political authorities when engaging traditional institutions.

Signed by Daasebre Kyeame Yaw Asante, the statement serves as a strong reaffirmation of the position of the Kwahu Traditional Area regarding the status of Eugene Asante Boadi and the ongoing dispute surrounding the Kwahu Paramount Stool.
