The Legal Green Association of Ghana (LGA), a left-leaning group of law students, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for what it calls a bold and morally upright address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In a statement issued Friday, the Association said President Mahama “spoke truth to power” at a time when many world leaders have remained silent. It highlighted his remark, “The crimes in Gaza must stop. It doesn’t matter what you call it: if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well then… it must be a duck”, describing it as a fearless indictment of global inaction.
The group stressed that Ghana, with its history of supporting liberation struggles and Pan-African unity, “cannot afford to be a mute spectator to genocide, regardless of which global power stands behind it.”
Addressing concerns about Ghana’s neutral stance in international conflicts, the LGA argued that neutrality should not mean silence in the face of atrocities. “Speaking out can only strengthen our moral authority when aligned with peace and international law,” it stated.
The Association also commended former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for his balanced commentary, noting his recognition of President Mahama’s global leadership while raising domestic issues constructively.
Warning against “fence-sitters and apologists for colonial masters,” the LGA urged civil society, religious bodies, academia, and citizens worldwide to rally around the call that “the crimes in Gaza must stop.”
“We are proud to have a leader who dares to stand where others have fallen silent,” the statement concluded, adding that President Mahama, in his address, represented not only Ghana but “humanity.”
