The University for Development Studies (UDS) pulled off a thrilling 2-1 extra-time victory over defending champions Paulista University of Brazil to win the 2025 World University Games football tournament.
In front of nearly 23,000 spectators, the Brazilians struck first inside 30 seconds, when Gabriel Viera pounced on a defensive error and lofted the ball over UDS goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo.
Undeterred, Ibrahim Tanko’s men seized control of the game, dictating possession and carving out chances, though poor finishing kept them behind. Their relentless pressure finally paid off deep into stoppage time. A dazzling run by Frimpong forced a save from Paulista’s keeper Silva, and captain Asigre Sulemana pounced on the rebound to level the score in the 93rd minute.
The game stretched into extra time with UDS on the front foot. Silva produced several fine saves to keep Paulista alive, but in the 121st minute, fate turned. Ezedeen Alhassan’s corner slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands and crossed the line, sealing UDS’s historic triumph.
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes as UDS celebrated their first-ever World University Games title, dethroning Paulista, who had lifted the crown two years earlier.
