President John Dramani Mahama has donated humanitarian relief items worth more than GH¢10 million to Cuba, Jamaica, and Sudan, reaffirming Ghana’s solidarity with nations facing crisis.
The donation, made up of food supplies, medical essentials and other relief materials, targets victims of Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean and displaced persons affected by the conflict in Sudan.
President Mahama said the gesture represents Ghana’s “deep sense of solidarity, respect, and fraternity” with friendly nations enduring hardship.
“This donation is a symbol of Ghana’s friendship and goodwill in challenging times for brotherly nations,” he said.
Relief Items
The consignment includes 2,400 bags of Ghana rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 boxes of medication, 500 mattresses, 500 pillows, 100 cartons of gari mix, and 50,000 T-shirts.
Other items comprise three 20-foot containers of Ghana-made chocolate products, water tanks, handwashing stations, portable toilets, and assorted clothing.
The items will be distributed as follows: 50% to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba, and 20% to humanitarian agencies operating in Sudan.
Mahama also expressed concern that the Sudan crisis risks being overlooked due to global focus on conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
The High Commissioner of Jamaica to Ghana, Mr. Lincoln George Downer, received the donation on behalf of the three nations and commended Ghana’s leadership for the timely gesture.
The donation was supported by several Ghanaian and international companies, including Latex Foam, Ashfoam, MTN, Farm Masters Global, Twelion Company, Dignity DTRR Apparel, Pharmanova Ghana, Atlantic Lifesciences Ltd., Mancwa Commodities Ltd., Duraplast Ltd., Terraprime Group Ghana Ltd., Mid Atlantic Group, COCOBOD, Cocoa Processing Company, and businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
