The Ashanti Region, long considered the stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was in the just-ended parliamentary and presidential election a formidable battleground for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

For the NDC, even marginal gains in this region could be transformative, given the numerical weight of its voter population. Achieving this, however, required a strategy that combined respect for Ashanti values, a connection to grassroots voters, and the ability to counter deeply entrenched political loyalties.
The Kofi Boakye Factor
The Retired Commissioner of Police, Nathan Kofi Boakye on Wednesday January 24, joined former President John Mahama for his ‘Building Ghana Tour” in the Ashanti region. This was after speculations were ripe that his name was being bandied about as a potential running mate to now president-elect John Dramani Mahama.
He was spotted at the Kejetia Market where Mr. Mahama addressed the crowd as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) embarked on the “24-Hour Economy Walk” aimed at sensitizing the public on the policy.
Kofi Boakye, affectionately called “Commander 1,” is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most charismatic and disciplined police officers in recent history. His name resonates beyond law enforcement, symbolizing integrity, justice, and a no-nonsense approach to governance. Born and bred in the Ashanti Region, Boakye’s cultural and traditional ties make him a respected figure among chiefs, opinion leaders, the ghettos and ordinary Asantes.
As speculation grows about his political ambitions or alignment, his perceived association with the NDC was viewed and trumpeted by the regional executives of the NDC who knew his value as a strategic asset. Overtly and covertly, in the case of the just-ended elections more covertly, his endorsement or involvement in the campaign, ensuring that ruling party was met at every turn and policing the ballot papers, insiders say, shifted the political calculus in a region that often votes along party lines.
Mobilizing the Youth and Floating Voters
One of the most critical segments of voters in Ashanti is the youth and floating voters. Kofi Boakye’s track record in community engagement and youth empowerment during his service as the police commander of the Ashanti region earned him a loyal following among young people. Many see him as a role model who embodies discipline and ambition, qualities that resonate deeply in the Ashanti culture.
What perhaps even angered the youth was the regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP), Chairman Benard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi’s brag that he would arrest the Commissioner of Police retired and his subsequent declaring the Kofi Boakye wanted.
While some they he did that shenanigan because of the fear of the retired police officer, others say he saw the onslaught ahead of him and decided to cry Wolf when there was none.
For the NDC, leveraging Boakye’s appeal among the youth was pivotal. His ability to connect with this demographic, combined with the party’s broader message of inclusivity and development, chipped away the NPP’s dominance, thereby reducing their votes by over 40% in the region.
Bridging the Perception Gap
The NDC has historically struggled with perceptions in the Ashanti Region, often labeled as an outsider party. Kofi Boakye’s presence help counter this narrative, presenting the party as one that recognizes and values Ashanti heritage. Impact on 2024 elections
The NDC’s leadership in the Ashanti region, going into the December 7 polls signalled its intention to focus heavily on the Ashanti Region, aiming to increase its vote share beyond the 26% achieved in the 2020 elections to 30 and even 40%. Kofi Boakye’s wand, through active subtle security operations and coordination with the regional executives significantly boost their efforts at reducing the Ashanti votes of the NPP.
More so, his involvement inspired other prominent Ashantis to rally behind the NDC, further legitimizing the party’s presence in the region. This led to a rippled effect, where even traditional NPP strongholds felt the pressure of a reinvigorated opposition.
