A taskforce of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested two Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining at Pankese in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.
The suspects, identified as Li Yongjin and Nou Chin Haw, were picked up on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at about 9:45 a.m. while actively carrying out unlawful mining operations.
According to the taskforce, the activities of the suspects had led to extensive destruction of forest reserves and cocoa farmlands, as well as severe pollution of nearby water bodies, including the Birim River.
During the operation, officers immobilised two excavators found at the site by removing their monitors and control boards after efforts to secure lowbed towing services proved unsuccessful. Several other illegal mining equipment and installations were also destroyed, while makeshift structures used to support the operations were set ablaze.
The team further seized a Toyota Tundra pickup with registration number AS 8120-20, which was being used by the suspects in the illegal mining activities.
