In a stirring defense of the economic foresight of the previous NPP government, Dr. Gideon Boako, Member of Parliament for Tano North and economic advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a heartfelt reminder to Ghanaians: “You’re standing on the shoulders of foresight — don’t forget who gave you that strength.”
At a time when the Ghanaian cedi struggles to find its feet against major international currencies, Dr. Boako points to one critical fact — the only reason Ghana still has the power to inject dollars into the economy to fight depreciation is because of the reserves the NPP government painstakingly built.
“Let me say it plainly,” he wrote. “If Bawumia and the NPP had not planned for the future, there would be no reserves to talk about today.”
Dr. Boako’s comments come in response to criticism from the NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi, whom he accused of downplaying the strategic work done to shore up Ghana’s gold and foreign exchange reserves. In a sharp rebuke, Boako likened the NDC’s stance to a person enjoying shade but cursing the tree.
According to him, under the IMF programme, Ghana was restricted to injecting only $60–80 million into the market, until the NPP government met and exceeded the IMF’s requirement of three months’ import cover. That milestone, Boako says, is what gave the current government room to maneuver today.
“Virtually all the gold proceeds from January to date have been pumped into the market to contain the cedi’s depreciation — but how did we get those proceeds? Because we built for the future,” he declared.
But his message was not just technical. It was deeply emotional. There was a warning embedded — a plea, almost.
Boako fears the current administration is burning through the reserves without showing concern for tomorrow. “It breaks my heart,” he wrote. “If we don’t think of the future, like the NPP did, we’ll have nothing left when the storm comes again.”
In a powerful statement, he called for gratitude, unity, and foresight.
“You should thank Bawumia and the NPP for building such a solid reserve for you to enjoy. Don’t be ungrateful. Ghana succeeds for all of us. Shalom.”
As Ghana walks the tightrope of economic recovery, Dr. Boako’s message is a reminder that sometimes, the biggest gift a leader can give is not what they do today — but what they leave behind for tomorrow.
