A group of youth reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), early yesterday, a shocking development launched an attack on Electrochem Ghana Limited in Ada in the Greater Accra region.
The incident, which occurred at the company’s premises in the Songor area, resulted in significant destruction and theft of company properties.
A video of the incident circulating on many social media platforms shows the attackers destroying windows, vandalizing equipment, and removing valuable parts, including excavator batteries and generators.
The group also took away company water pumps claiming in the video that the items were seized by the company.
Several motorbikes and other valuable items were reportedly stolen during the raid.
Sources allege that the attack was orchestrated by the NDC Sege Constituency Organizer, who is said to have led the assault alongside the area’s Member of Parliament.
The motive behind the attack is believed to be political.
The NDC youth reportedly view Electrochem as being favoured by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, which they accuse of backing the company’s contract to mine salt at the Songor Lagoon.
Electrochem Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the McDan Group, has been managing the Songor Lagoon salt project under a lease agreement with the government, a move that has faced opposition from some community members.
The company is yet to issue an official statement on the attack, and the police have launched an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This incident has sparked tension in the area, with calls for calm and for political actors to avoid escalating conflicts.
