One of the contenders for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairmanship race, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, has asserted that being the national chairman of the NPP does not require a person to be ‘macho’ to wit hot-headed and radical to be able to tackle the issues bedevilling the party.
He has, therefore, promised to with all his might, body and ideas ensure the internal crisis of the party are resolved should he emerge that National Chairman of the party after tomorrow’s congress to elect new national executives to steer the affairs of the party.
“Being a party chairman is not about machoism, it’s the minds coming together. When it comes to working and making sure that things work, you can count on me. I am ready to serve the party,” he said at a press conference in Accra yesterday.
The man who served as education, ports and harbour minister in former president Kufour’s government, who drew the curtain on his campaign down on Wednesday said it was his strongest conviction that party unity and welfare of the grassroots are the surest way of bringing victory to the 2024 elections.
“People sacrifice with their lives but when we come to power, we forget them. If you want to mobilize them for 2024 you need to treat them well. One way of motivating people is putting in a welfare scheme. Anytime you mention it people say it’s not doable. I say it’s doable. We are able to mobilize funds for elections so we can mobilize funds for the youth too”, Prof, Ameyaw Ekumfi asserted.
He added that “it is up to us to remain united after the primaries and I have promised to work harder at it”.
He was also grateful to the party for what it has done for him, saying, “I feel that the Party has done well for me. But for the Party I would have retired as a professor. I have worked with Nana Addo as a colleague Cabinet Minister so I am in a unique position to involve them to help in resolving the issues.”
Aside the welfare and the unity, the former MP for Techiman said he is going to ensure that indiscipline in the Party becomes a thing of the past. “You can’t tell people to go and vote at dawn that is indiscipline. On discipline I am going to be firm,” Prof. Ekumfi stressed.
Prof. Ekumfi later stressed that the Party has been faithful to him hence his desire to serve the party and give back to the Party by securing victory in the 2024 elections.
