A New Patriotic Party (NPP) Electoral Area Coordinator for Gyankobaa in the Atwima-Nwabiagya South Constituency in the Ashanti Region was subjected to severe of humiliation at the just-ended Delegates Conference of the party held at the party’s Constituency Office at Afari.
Charles Henry Opoku who is a former Assemblyman for Gyankobaa Electoral area and current NPP Electoral Coordinator, was embarrassingly prevented from partaking in the Party’s Constitutional duties over his entrench stance against acts of intimidation by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Michael AmoahAwuku and the Member of Parliament (MP) Emmanuel AgyeiAnhwere.
An enraged NPP man disclosed that the action was at the instance of the MP and the MCE which saw armed police intervene in the ensuing confusion at the venue of the event.
According to him, the two appointees had plotted for him to be suspended from his position which has failed because no such letter has been received from the party in view of the fact that he is not in support of the reappointment of the Michael AmoahAwuku as MCE for the area for obvious reasons including mark of incompetence and divisive nature of his leadership.
He revealed that the reason the lawmaker who is in league with the MCE hated him was also as a result of his constitutional right of signing for another person to contest the MP in the NPP primaries in the run-up to the 2020 polls for which reason he has become a target of revenge.
“The two officials resorted to victimizing persons they perceive are their enemies and are using the constituency executives to facilitate this agenda by suspending them. I am a Polling Station Coordinator for 12 years and I have never misconducted myself to warrant this kind of embarrassment. Is that the kind of party we want to grow in the constituency in order to break the 8”, he asked.
Residents appeal to President Akufo-Addo to respect pact He Has with our chiefs.
Staunch NPP members in the AtwimaNwabiagya South are however calling on President Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addo to respect the pact he has with chiefs of the area to reappoint any other person either than the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Michael AmoahAwuku.
Speaking at the side-lines of the Delegates Conference held last week, they indicated that the current MCE is a divisive person who is destroying the party in the Municipal.
“All we are saying is that since the NPP government took over office in 2017, Nana Addo appointed Awuku as our MCE. we were all happy about his appointment. We decided to give him the needed support to succeed. But as time went on, we realized Awuku is a divisive person who was destroying the party in the Constituency. As Executives if you complain, you’ll be suspended; our rights to share our opinions were curtailed. He disregards the Chiefs, market women and all the well-meaning people of AtwimaNwabiagya South. Our Chiefs sent a petition to the President asking that he should not be reappointed but we have information that some people are lobbying for him and we are against that. If the President reappoints him, he will have problems with the political party and it will mean that Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addo does not respect our chiefs and other opinion leaders in our municipal. There are three people who are in the contest; the President can appoint any of them and not Awuku.”
“We will demonstrate against this government and it won’t be the best of demonstrations. We don’t want any bad news about AtwimaNwabiagya during the tenure of Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addo so he should do the needful and change Awuku. Our Chiefs have been to his office and have informed him of the dislike for Awuku. If the President goes behind the Chiefs and reappoints Awuku as MCE it will be proof that the President does not have regards for our chiefs.”
“Some people will not understand why we demand the removal of Awuku but we even organized a press conference to drum home the need for his removal and we were beaten by his thugs. The President should look at the 2020 elections and what happened when we had problems between some Members of Parliament and their MMDCEs. If the President appoints Awuku a similar voting pattern will happen in 2024 and the party will be the one that suffers.”
