Nearly seventy (70) New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament yesterday besieged the office of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in Accra, to declare their support for him, ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primary of the party.
Dr. Bawumia, who has declared his intention to contest the NPP flagbearership again received a major boost during the visit, following the pledging of allegiance and declaration of support from the party’s MPs.
Dr. Bawunia warmly welcomed the MPs, and expressed gratitude to them for the visit and their support.
The NPP, on Tuesday announced it will organise an early election to select its 2028 flagbearer, and the election is slated for January 31, 2026, ahead of the party’s election for executive positions across board.
The declaration of support from more than two third of the party’s MPs just days after the announcement is a major statement to the former Vice President, who led the party to the 2024 elections.
Dr. Bawumia still enjoys considerable support from the grassroot members of the party, and among stalwarts at the top, with many calling for him to be retained as the party’s Flagbearer, in line with party tradition of giving Presidential Candidates more opportunities after failing to win in their first attempt.
Advocates for the retention of Dr. Bawumia as Flagbearer, have referenced the enduring stories of former President’s John Agyekum Kufuor, who was nominated twice in succession by the party before winning, as well as immediate past President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was also backed three times by the NPP at presidential primaries, before eventually winning on his third attempt.
