The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed reports suggesting that INTERPOL has lifted its Red Notice on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, clarifying that the matter remains under active review.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 19, the OSP explained that INTERPOL’s Commission for the Control of Files (CCF) is still considering an application filed by Mr Ofori-Atta for the removal of his name from the Red Notice.
According to the OSP, the CCF notified Ghanaian authorities in October that the former minister had requested the removal of his details. Ghana subsequently submitted its response on October 22, 2025.
The OSP further indicated that INTERPOL later informed Ghana that Mr Ofori-Atta had filed additional arguments, prompting the Commission to request another response from the Ghanaian side by November 21, 2025. As the OSP stressed, “the proceedings are still pending and the Commission is still studying the case.”
The clarification follows widespread media reports claiming that INTERPOL had already deleted the notice from its website. The OSP urged the public to disregard such claims, describing them as “mischief and misinformation.” The office explained that during ongoing CCF proceedings, “the applicant’s name, image and details are often redacted from public view until a final determination is made.”
Background
INTERPOL issued the Red Notice for Mr Ofori-Atta in June 2025 after the OSP declared him a fugitive for failing to appear for questioning. The case attracted significant public and media attention both locally and internationally.
However, the OSP’s latest statement shows that while Mr Ofori-Atta has applied for the Red Notice to be withdrawn, no decision has yet been made by INTERPOL.
Recent developments
This clarification comes just a day after the OSP formally charged Mr. Ofori-Atta, Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), and six others with 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences
