Government officials have been touting government’s achievements in the last eight (8) years of governance at a townhall meeting held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region of the country yesterday.
The event, part of the Ministry of Information’s Regional Townhall Series, provided a platform for officials to update locals on the government’s achievements across various sectors, including infrastructure development, economic progress, and healthcare improvement.
One of the key highlights of the townhall was government’s achievements in road infrastructure particularly in the region. The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, said the Akufo-Addo led administration has built more roads in his region than the erstwhile administration of John Dramani Mahama.
“The Akufo-Addo administration has delivered on its promise to enhance infrastructure in the Eastern Region. Since 2017, we have completed 185 kilometers more in road infrastructure, surpassing what was done during the entire tenure of the NDC,” he emphasized. “This progress has not only improved road connectivity but has also boosted economic activities and made transportation easier for all.”
He outlined key road projects that have been completed in the region, including the rehabilitation of the Nkawkaw-Noyem-New Abirem roads, the reconstruction of the Koforidua-Asesewa-Abourso roads, and the partial reconstruction of the Koforidua-Bunso Road. These projects, he noted, have significantly enhanced access and connectivity in the region, reducing travel time and fostering economic growth.
The townhall meeting also addressed the government’s economic achievements. Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng shared insights into the recent economic reforms and their impact. “We have made considerable progress in stabilizing the economy and fostering growth. Our policies have been designed to enhance economic resilience and create opportunities for businesses and individuals alike,” he noted.
He elaborated on various economic initiatives, including fiscal policies and investment in key sectors. “Our approach has been multi-faceted, targeting both short-term relief and long-term sustainability. We are seeing positive results, and we remain focused on driving economic development across the country,” he added.
Another major focus of the townhall was the Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to build 111 new hospitals nationwide to improve healthcare delivery. Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Presidential Adviser on Health, provided an update on the project’s progress. “I am pleased to report that 50% of the Agenda 111 hospitals are set to be completed and handed over soon,” Dr. Nsiah-Asare announced.
He highlighted the project’s significance in addressing gaps in healthcare infrastructure and improving access to medical services, stressing that the completion of these hospitals will be a major milestone for the country as it reflects government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare and ensuring that quality medical services are available to all Ghanaians.
On her part, Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar whose Ministry is responsible for putting together the meetings underscored the significance of these events to the government’s accountability efforts. “These town hall meetings are important because they allow us to bring governance closer to the people,” she said. “They provide an opportunity for citizens to engage directly with government officials, ask questions, and receive real-time updates on government projects and policies.”
Madam Abubakar explained that the meetings help bridge the gap between the government and the public, fostering trust and ensuring transparency. “By promoting open dialogue and sharing information, we aim to build a stronger relationship with the citizens, which is vital for sustaining our democracy and promoting inclusive development,” she added.
The town hall also included a session for residents to ask questions and engage with the officials. The interaction allowed community members to voice their concerns and seek clarification on various issues. With plans to visit all 16 regions, the government aims to ensure every citizen has the opportunity to be part of the nation’s development process, reflecting its commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive growth.
