Nana Obodade Amponem III, the Kontihene of Akyem Asuom, has launched a fierce political assault on Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party, declaring that Ghanaians must keep the party in opposition for “40 years” over what he described as years of national plunder and failed leadership.
In a fiery address during a public durbar captured in a viral video, the traditional ruler accused officials of the former Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration of wrecking the country through greed, corruption, and abuse of power.
Drawing parallels with the Biblical story in the Book of Numbers, Nana Obodade Amponem III said Ghanaians must politically punish the generation of leaders he believes betrayed the country’s trust.
“As it was in the Bible in Numbers 14, where the good Lord punished the disobedient Israelites with 40 years in the wilderness, Ghanaians must also send that generation of thieves, robbers and looters into political wilderness,” he declared.
The chief did not limit his criticism to the former President and his Vice President alone. He argued that every layer of the NPP hierarchy — from national executives to constituency officials — must bear responsibility for what he sees as the collapse of accountability under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia era.
According to him, Ghana cannot move forward if the same political actors remain at the center of national leadership.
“Anybody associated with the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration must be held accountable. From the national executives down to the grassroots, the NPP owes Ghana answers,” he charged.
He further insisted that the country needs a complete political reset, arguing that a new generation of leaders with integrity and a genuine desire to serve must replace what he described as an entrenched political class driven by self-interest.
The comments are expected to intensify the already heated political debate surrounding the legacy of the Akufo-Addo administration and the future ambitions of Dr. Bawumia ahead of the next electoral cycle.
