The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a South African national at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle over 30 kilograms of cannabis into Ghana.
The suspect, who arrived on a flight from Thailand on Monday, November 10, was arrested after an intelligence-led operation triggered a thorough search of his luggage. Officials discovered the substance concealed in vacuum-sealed packages hidden within his personal items.
In a surprising development, an airline staff member stationed at the airport was also arrested for allegedly aiding the foreign national to evade security screening.
NACOC says preliminary investigations suggest a coordinated smuggling attempt involving both individuals. They are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
The Commission reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking, emphasizing that stringent security and intelligence measures are in place to detect and prevent such crimes.
“NACOC wishes to remind the public that anyone found complicit in narcotics-related offences, irrespective of nationality or position, will face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
