Tensions are mounting in the Volta Region following the controversial candidacy of Mr. Gabriel Adovoe Kwabla Kwamigah, popularly known as Tanko Kwamigah, for the Council of State position. His bid has ignited widespread outrage as he battles multiple criminal court cases related to alleged fraudulent activities.
The news of his candidacy has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the election process, with many residents and stakeholders questioning how he managed to pass the eligibility screening. Critics argue that allowing a candidate with pending criminal cases to contest could undermine the credibility of the Council of State, a body traditionally reserved for individuals of high moral standing and integrity.
Adding fuel to the controversy, there are allegations that the Volta Regional Executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are actively supporting Kwamigah’s bid after reportedly receiving financial inducements from him. Instead of maintaining neutrality in the upcoming elections, these executives are accused of openly pushing for his victory, sparking outrage among concerned citizens.
Many fear that if Kwamigah secures a seat on the Council, it will tarnish the institution’s reputation. “There are several criminal cases against him, and that does not bode well for the image of the Council of State,” a concerned resident told this newspaper.
Kwamigah has also been linked to the infamous MenzGold scam, which saw thousands of Ghanaians lose their hard-earned savings in an investment scheme that collapsed, leaving investors in financial ruin. Allegedly, he was a key player in the scandal, working closely with Nana Appiah Mensah, widely known as NAM 1, the embattled CEO of the fraudulent gold dealership firm.
In light of these serious allegations, concerned citizens are calling on the Volta Regional NDC Executives to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. They urge party leaders to uphold due diligence in vetting candidates and ensure that only individuals with credible reputations contest the Council of State elections.
The election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, across all regional capitals, and all eyes are on the Volta Region as the controversy unfolds.
