Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has extended her condolences to the families of six young women who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a military recruitment exercise in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The incident occurred when thousands of job seekers converged on the venue in hopes of enlisting in the Ghana Armed Forces, resulting in a deadly stampede that also left several others critically injured.
In a statement signed by her Press Secretary, Ama Pratt, the Vice President described the event as “deeply heartbreaking,” expressing her profound sorrow over the loss of young lives.
“The Vice President extends her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. She calls on all Ghanaians to remain calm as authorities investigate the cause of the incident and implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future,” the statement read.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further emphasized the need for stronger safety protocols at all national recruitment exercises to safeguard lives and avert a recurrence.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the suspension of the ongoing recruitment in Accra, while Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has assured the public of a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the disaster.
The tragedy has sparked nationwide grief and renewed calls for reforms in how large-scale public recruitment exercises are organized in Ghana.
