Tough-talking Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi was yesterday whisked away by personel of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), hours after honouring an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra.
Sources familiar with the matter and present at the CID premises told the New Crusading GUIDE that Wontumi, who was initially at the CID headquarters to assist with a high-stakes probe, was transferred into EOCO custody for further questioning.
The details of the investigation remain tightly guarded.
The NPP firebrand was formally cautioned on Monday 26 May for allegedly operating an illegal mining business, polluting protected water bodies, and encroaching on forest reserves.
A CID press release confirmed his appearance at their offices on Monday, where he arrived at noon flanked by a high-powered legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Wontumi was granted bail after submitting a formal statement, with instructions to return for additional questioning—a directive that led to Tuesday’s EOCO development.
The NPP chairman, known for his brash style, has denied any wrongdoing. He told reporters Monday he had complied with all legal requirements related to his mining interests and dismissed separate allegations linking him to a controversial COCOBOD payment.
