The Association of African Universities (AAU) has formally sought full diplomatic status in recognition of its significant role in advancing higher education and research across Africa.
The request was made during a high-level engagement between the AAU’s leadership and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at her office.
Established on the pan-African vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the AAU has evolved into a major platform for academic cooperation, bringing together more than 450 universities from 46 African countries.
The Association’s leadership expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana for its continued support, particularly during Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s tenure as Minister for Education, which contributed to the establishment of the AAU’s permanent headquarters and the strengthening of its institutional capacity.
In response, the Vice President reaffirmed her commitment to the AAU’s mission and encouraged the leadership to deepen public and stakeholder engagement to better showcase the Association’s impact across the continent.
She stressed the importance of amplifying the AAU’s contributions to higher education and research in order to enhance its advocacy role and continental influence.
The meeting highlighted the AAU’s ongoing pursuit of excellence in education, research, and knowledge exchange, with full diplomatic status expected to further elevate its international standing and operational effectiveness.
“Ghana remains committed to supporting the AAU’s mission to transform Africa’s academic landscape,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated.
