INCUMBENT Member of Parliament (MP) Akwapim North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Hon Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah has being dragged to court for violating the electoral law of the NPP constitution.
This follows the decision of some New Patriotic Party polling Station executives in the Akwapim North Constituency in the Eastern Region to pray to an Accra High Court for an order of injunction restraining the NPP from presenting Hon Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah to the Electoral Commission as the NPP’s candidate for the Akwapim North Constituency in the 2020 general elections without convening an extraordinary delegates conference.
The polling station executives are also asking for a declaration that, the NPP’s purported nomination and approval of the incumbent Member of Parliament for Akwapim North Constituency as the party’s parliamentary candidate in the upcoming general elections in December 2020 is blatant disregard of the NPP’s constitution, illegal, null and void and of no effect.
The polling station executives averred that, unless the court intervene, their constitutional rights as delegates of the NPP has been severely violated, is being violated and will be irretrievably violated by the NPP..
The polling station executives represented in court by Mr. Stephen Asare Darko and seven others argued that, the party’s constitution requires an extraordinary delegates conference to select a parliamentary candidate for the Constituency.
However, the party disregarded this constitutional provision and election regulations and surreptitiously called a meeting of selected members of the Constituency to a private residence where they purportedly nominated and declared Hon Ama Dokua Asiamah as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the December 2020 elections.
The Accra High Court of Justice , General Jurisdiction Division 4 presided over by her lordship Olivia Obeng adjourned the case to August 13,2020 because the defendant didn’t make an appearance in court.
Counsel for the plaintiff, Mr. Raymond Bagnabu averted in court that, security guards at the NPP’s party head office has declined the bailiff entry into the Party’s headquarters to serve them.
However, he hinted to file for a substituted service in order to get leadership or representative of the NPP to take note of the summons and appear in court.
Speaking in an interview with senior journalists with the spokesperson for the Concerned citizens of the NPP in the Akwapim North Constituency, Mr Stephen Asare expressed disquiet over the attitudes and misconduct of the leadership of the NPP to declare the incumbent MP as the current parliamentary candidate for the 2020 general elections.
He called the High Court to cancel the popular acclamation of the MP and allow for them to hold their parliamentary primary to genuinely elect the parliamentary candidate for the NPP in the 2020 general election.
He noted that there had not been any election time in the area when they allowed anyone to go unpose on the ticket of the NPP in the area.
He stated that the actions of the leadership of the constituency executives to declare the incumbent MP the parliamentary candidate for the area on the ticket of the NPP is completely violation of the constitution of the NPP.
He stated that their checks on the grounds in the area have revealed that the incumbent MP has lost gross recognition and respect of the constituents as a result of that many eligible voters are threatening to vote skirt and blouse in the upcoming 2020 general elections.
