Government’s Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah is urging Ghanaians to disregard recent allegations made by former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu against President Akufo-Addo and the NPP government.
This, according to Mr. Boakye-Danquah, is because the former government appointee has lost all credibility.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, he argued that Mr. Amidu, who is also called Citizen Vigilante, failed to execute his mandate as the Special Prosecutor, leading to his resignation and subsequent attacks on the President and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His comment follows an article published by Mr. Amidu in which he accused President Akufo-Addo of attempting to undermine the 2024 elections to ensure that no other political party wins power in Ghana aside from the New Patriotic Party.
Again, Mr. Amidu had alleged that the latest National Security appointments by the President were part of a grand agenda to use state agencies to subvert the will of the people.
“Upon his assumption of office as the President of Ghana on 7 January 2017 Nana Akufo-Addo activated his long game to break the 8 at the 2024 Presidential Election. He determined to ensure that by the middle of his second term in office all the instruments of law enforcement, state security and intelligence power of the Republic of Ghana should be led by persons with proven political dedication and loyalty to his person, and his family and friends.
“The appointment by the President of Mr. Edward Asomani, Deputy National Security Co-ordinator, to act as National Security Co-ordinator, with effect from Monday, 8th August 2022 subject to the confirmation of his appointment to the receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the National Security Council, given in consultation with the Public Service Commission gives finality to Nana Akufo-Addo’s long game to capture the National Security Secretariat apparatus towards his electoral agenda for the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections,” he had detailed in the release that was dated August 11.
But rubbishing these claims, the Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security said the NPP government does not have any intention of rigging the election or subverting the will of the people.
“I think that the far-fetched allegations that are coming from the learned gentleman, Martin Amidu should be disregarded because it is not in any scheme or in the interest of government to see that we push any of these things into the 2024 general elections.”
He further stressed that it is also not out of place for the President to be optimistic when it comes to the 2024 general election since every political party wants to win or retain power.
“It is not wrong for the President to say that the NDC should be in opposition for a long time. I will make that same statement as well because we have seen the leadership of the NDC. We have seen how many years that they had an opportunity to govern this country and yet still we have seen how backwards that had been,” he added.
