A specialized police task force targeting illegal mining activities has arrested nine individuals and impounded four excavators during a major operation at Akani in Ghana’s Western Region.
According to the Director of Special Operations at the Police Headquarters, ACP Eric Asiedu, the raid was carried out following credible intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of heavy-duty mining machinery near the Samreboï Township.
Under the command of ASP Mr. Adorye, the team intercepted two low-bed trucks transporting excavators, reportedly under escort by armed men suspected to be military personnel.
Earlier in the day, the task force had stormed a large illegal mining site on the outskirts of Asankragua, where additional equipment was seized and suspects apprehended.
This latest action is part of an ongoing initiative by the Ghana Police Service to support the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) broader mission to clamp down on illegal mining and protect the country’s natural resources.
All confiscated machinery has since been secured by the police.
