President John Dramani Mahama has held talks with the European Union’s Special Representative for the Sahel, João Cravinho, as Ghana and the EU move to strengthen cooperation on regional security and development.
At the meeting, held Tuesday at the Presidency in Accra, both sides discussed expanding their strategic partnership to confront the growing security, governance and stability challenges in the Sahel.
President Mahama outlined Ghana’s ongoing diplomatic efforts with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger — and stressed the need for a unified regional approach. He proposed a renewed and more robust Accra Initiative to help tackle the expanding threat of terrorism in West Africa.
He also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to sustained engagement with the Sahel states.
Mr. Cravinho is expected to return in early 2026 to push discussions toward concrete programmes. Ghana and the EU agreed to fast-track the finalisation and implementation of their Security and Defence Partnership to solidify cooperation.
The EU envoy reiterated Europe’s support for Ghana’s efforts to strengthen maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, noting its strategic link to long-term stability in the Sahel
