The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a stern warning to transport stations and drivers who fail to comply with the newly mandated 15% fare reduction. The Union has vowed to enforce sanctions on defaulters.
GPRTU General Secretary, Godfred Abulbire, acknowledged reports from the Ashanti Region where some operators delayed implementing the changes, citing late communication. However, he emphasized that steps have been taken to ensure full adherence moving forward.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, May 24, Abulbire stated, “The chairman has issued another press release, making it clear that any station or branch under our jurisdiction that fails to comply by tomorrow will face sanctions.”
He added that a particularly effective penalty would involve barring non-compliant drivers from loading passengers. “Drivers strongly dislike being prevented from loading. That’s a measure we’re prepared to enforce,” he said.
The fare reduction follows a drop in fuel prices, with authorities expecting operators to reflect the change. While some drivers have complied, others argue that high operational costs make the adjustment difficult.
