Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to securing reparatory justice for Africans and people of African descent, as the African Union (AU) marks 2025 as the Year for Reparatory Justice.
In a statement to commemorate Africa Day 2025, Mahama—appointed by the AU as its lead advocate for reparations—emphasized his resolve to work with African leaders and stakeholders to advance the agenda.
“The AU has declared 2025 as the year for justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations,” Mahama said. “As the AU champion for this critical cause, I am deeply committed to working with you all to achieve this objective.”
The AU’s focus on reparatory justice represents a collective push to address historical wrongs, including the impacts of slavery, colonialism, and systemic inequality. Mahama’s leadership echoes growing international support for concrete reparations and acknowledgment of past injustices.
