Several fishermen in Senya Breku in the Central Region have been left stranded after armed men reportedly attacked them at sea and made away with their equipment.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, when the fishermen were returning to shore from their usual overnight fishing expedition. According to reports, the attackers, who were travelling in a black boat, opened fire before seizing outboard motors and generator sets from seven canoes.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the attack in an interview with Citi News. She explained that the victims had gone fishing toward the Nyanyano side when they were ambushed.
“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen normally go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked,” she said.
She noted that the assailants robbed the fishermen of their outboard motors and generator sets but declined to comment on the nationality of the suspects, stating that investigations are ongoing.
Security agencies have since been deployed to the area. According to the MP, the military, the Ghana Navy and a marine police unit dispatched by the Inspector-General of Police are working together to track down the perpetrators and enhance security along the coastline.
