Some 126 members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Mpreaso Constituency of the Eastern Region have defected to join the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December 7 general election.
According to the group, they have associated themselves with a party that was born and raised in falsehood.
The main reason for their defects was that the NPP and President Nana Akufo-Addo has exceeded expectations in terms of the campaign promises he made back in 2016.
The leader of the group, Evans Osei, said when the Vice President indicated at the town hall meeting a few weeks ago that the NPP had achieved more than 75% of their promises he agreed with him because the massive infrastructural boost in Mpraeso tells a lot about this current administration, adding that at first, they were in the dark but now they have seen the light.
The group including some Assembly members declared their intention to join and campaign for the NPP at a presser held at Kwahu – Mpreaso.
Mr Osei said they defected not because others have been defecting from opposition party by joining the ruling party but because this government is on the right path and beats almost every government under this fourth republic when it comes to achievements within a three- and half-year period.
He opined that “this government has really done well because we thought he was joking and look how massively they have lifted the country economically. We agree he made so many promises which we thought he won’t be able to deliver but he is doing just that. And here in Mpraeso we have gotten our 1D1F at a time the constituency is facing a huge challenge in terms of development.”
“With this, I sat and thought over my decisions and choices. The NPP led by President Akufo-Addo have good visions for Ghana and it will come to realization when all Ghanaians give them another four years to continue with their good works”, he said.
Mr Osei confirmed that more individuals are defecting and joining their group dubbed “operation 98% for Nana and OPK” which is seeing a rise in their numbers.
“We want to win for votes for Nana and Denis Opoku Ansah the NPP parliamentary candidate for Mpraeso constituency so that they can continue to deliver Ghana out of the crisis. This season of the COVID-19 has shown clearly that Ghana has a leader and it’s up to all of us to maintain him or risk losing all the good things”, he added.
The Regional Secretary of the NPP, Jeff Konadu Addo later met the leadership after the press conference and welcome them into NPP and encouraged them to remain resolute.
He thanked the members for knowing the good works of the NPP and also having believed in the President to support his course.
