The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged Ghanaians to support the government, to implement the 12-point plan outlined by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the Fellow Ghanaians address, to regenerate the economy to provide urgent relief for Ghanaians.
Mr. Ahiagbah said there was nothing more important to the party and the government than to improve conditions for Ghanaians because we had a plan coming into government, and this is not what we envisioned, certainly not what we promised Ghanaians. We are here because of the rude interruption of Covid-19 in 2020 and Russia’s war in Ukraine, in February 2022, which jointly threw our economic program out of the stable rhythm of 7% average GDP growth in 2017, 2018, and 2019. This is my view, informed the finance minister’s apology to Ghanaians. Apology from the finance minister is in order because we know the government has a responsibility to bounce back the economy stronger with measures to strengthen it against the inherent vulnerabilities of globalization. The good news is that this government has demonstrated the capacity to grow the economy, we need the patience and the resolute support of Ghanaians for the government to implement its Covid recovery program.
Speaking to the New Crusading Guide in an interview, the NPP Communications Director said he is impressed with the responses by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta when he appeared before the Adhoc Committee of Parliament. He said, Ken, appeared with facts, which he presented with utmost deference to Ghanaians through the Committee. The finance minister convinced me about the genuine intent of the NPP and its government for Ghana. According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the NDC saw a political opportunity and took it. The evidence of Ken’s performance confirms that the NDC’s move to censure the finance minister was simply for their political advantage, never about finding solutions or establishing any facts because the fact of all their seven allegations was readily available.
I am happy that the Finance Minister has come out to clear his name and the government of any wrongdoing and Ghanaians now know the truth”. What is important now is that we must work together to serve the best interest of Ghanaians because the vast majority of Ghanaians are going through hard times.
Mr. Ahiagbah further described the initiative taken by the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and as proactive, but says he is concerned with its sustainability. Low food prices in the cities are needed urgently but we take into account all the factors and especially our pro-market values. I have heard the spokes for the ministry underscore that their intervention is not an attempt to draw the government into the business, but to demonstrate that cheaper food prices are possible. We must commend the ministry, but insist that they paint a full picture to bring Ghanaians along.
