Testimony By Lt-Gen Seth Kofi Obeng Former Chief Military Observer And Force Commander In Angola(Monua) Force Commander Southern Lebanon (Unifil) In Honour Of His Excellency Mr Kofi Annan Former Un Secretary General.
Throughout my stints as a senior UN Peacekeeper and a military observer, in missions as diverse as Angola (Monua), Southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the UN follow-up committee of the Greentree agreement of 2006, on the Bakassi peninsula, when his excellency Mr Kofi Annan was in charge of promoting world peace at the United Nations, I was struck by his empathy and the calm he exuded even in the most tense situations.
A calm that literally infected the most agitated factions in the mission areas. Beneath the soft-spoken voice and calm demeanor however, lay a steely determination to propagate the tenets of international morality founded on a just world order; in which might did not necessarily equate to right. The world is safer today, thanks to his Excellency Mr Kofi Annan.
He was a real gem of a statesman and a rare gift to Africa and the world. May the soul of this great son of Africa rest in perfect peace with the ultimate decider.
