President John Dramani Mahama has announced that over GHC30.8 billion has been allocated in the 2026 national budget to fund the government’s Big Push infrastructure initiative — more than double this year’s GHC13.8 billion allocation.
Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for the Wa Big Push Project on Tuesday, November 11, President Mahama said the significant funding boost reflects his administration’s commitment to accelerating road development, improving regional connectivity, and strengthening Ghana’s role as a key trade hub in West Africa.
“The day of poor construction, inflated claims, and abandoned projects is over,” Mahama declared. “Ghana deserves better. Contractors must deliver quality on schedule and within budget, and taxpayers must see value for every kilometre of road we build.”
He assured contractors that timely payment will not be a challenge under the new funding framework, noting that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has guaranteed prompt disbursements once certified work is completed.
“As I’ve said, this year GHC13.8 billion was allocated to the Big Push roads. Next year, GHC30.8 billion has been reserved. So if a contractor is not working, it’s not because payment hasn’t been made,” he stated.
The Big Push initiative aims to complete ongoing projects and start new ones across the northern transport corridors and other critical parts of the country.
President Mahama also urged local communities to take ownership of the projects’ success.
“To achieve results, I call on residents to support the work, protect materials, and cooperate with engineers,” he appealed.
