- At least six people have died and several others injured in a stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
Thousands of young Ghanaians had gathered at the stadium, eager to enlist, but intense crowding at entry points led to chaos. The six victims’ bodies have been taken to the 37 Military Hospital morgue, while the injured receive treatment at the hospital’s casualty ward.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and blocked major roads to maintain order and assist rescue operations.
The military had extended the recruitment period by a week after technical glitches on the application portal delayed some applicants. In a statement, Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, Acting Director General of Public Relations, explained the extension was meant to accommodate those affected by the technical issues.
Authorities have not yet officially commented on the stampede, but preliminary reports indicate poor crowd management and the overwhelming turnout were contributing factors. Investigations are expected to determine the causes and prevent similar incidents in the future.
