President John Dramani Mahama has raised alarm over the growing trend of unilateral decision-making by global powers, stressing that such actions undermine decades of rules-based international cooperation. Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy visit from His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, Mahama said unilateral tariffs and trade restrictions threaten the global trading system and hamper collective progress.
“Countries wake up in the morning and impose tariffs on anybody else. It is upending the rules-based trading system we have nurtured for years,” he warned.
Highlighting the urgency of multilateral collaboration, the President said global challenges like climate change cannot be solved by any one country alone. “The only way we can tackle the climate crisis is multilaterally. I want to congratulate the UK for its leadership on climate action and resilience,” Mahama added.
At a time of shifting global dynamics, he emphasized that progress will rely on “a coalition of the willing.” Ghana must forge partnerships that go beyond individual national interests, with its historic ties to the United Kingdom serving as a key foundation.
“There is no better country to partner with than the United Kingdom, which has been a historical ally of Ghana since independence,” he noted.
Mahama also reaffirmed government support for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, praising it for offering young Ghanaians scholarships and opportunities to develop discipline, creativity, and ambition. “As you step into very big shoes, the Government of Ghana will continue to partner with the award committee to ensure our youth participate as actively as possible,” he said.
