It was an episode of laughter yesterday at Atobiase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region when Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia humourously said Former President Mahama’s social contract with Ghanaians during his tenure was a “bad marriage”.
According to Dr Bawumia, Mr. John Mahama as president from mid 2012 to 2016, can be best described as a husband who exhibited gross irresponsibility towards the wellbeing of his wife- the suffering Ghanaian.
“You marry a man and he’s unable to cater for your needs and that of your children; if you’re hungry, he tells you there’s no food; you ask for money for the kids’ school feels, he tells you there’s no money;…you want to visit the hospital, he says he can’t afford; you ask for a job, he’s unable to provide. Your whole life becomes miserable.
“Then you divorce this man and marry another man. This new husband takes very good care of you. You ask him for money to pay the children’s school fees, he ensures that they attend school free of charge; if you’re hungry, he provides food for you; if you want healthcare, he ensures you have it. In fact, he even makes an ambulance readily available for you if you need it to take you to the hospital.
“Then all of a sudden, your ex-husband shows up and asks you to marry him again. Will you marry him? Of course you won’t”, he said.
As he narrated this metaphorical relationship, the crowd exploded into laughter and cheered him on.
He said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown Ghanaians that he is a responsible husband who is committed to their wellbeing.
He said the implementation of the free Senior High School (SHS), Planting for Food and Jobs, One District; One Factory and $1 million; One Constituency policies is clear evidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is transforming the country.
He, therefore, urged the gathering to rally behind the government to enable it achieve all of its objectives.
Earlier, the Chief of Atobiase, Nana Opia Mensah II, had showered praises on the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government for bringing development to his community.
He said the kind of development seen over the past three-and-half years in Atobiase was unprecedented.
He mentioned the construction of a modern Junior High School (JHS) and a health facility as just few of the many developmental projects his community has enjoyed under the current NPP administration.
He, therefore, pledged his support for the government to continue with its good works.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wassa East, Mr. Wilson Arthur, who doubles as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the area, also urged the gathering to continue to have faith in the NPP and vote for it massively on December 7.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is on a two-day tour of the Western Region to cut sod for some new projects, inspect ongoing ones and interact with the people.
