In a remarkable turn of events that underscores the rising influence of youth-driven philanthropy in higher education, the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is poised to welcome an expanded cohort of students.

This is due to an ambitious new scholarship programme initiated by a young  girl, Aquila Beausoleil who is passionate about the study of law.

The scholarship, known as the Aquila Beausoleil-UCC Law Scholarship, is the result of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Faculty and the Beausoleil family, establishing the first long-term, privately funded initiative of its kind at the law school.

While the direct financial benefits to deserving students are clear, what sets this programme apart is the inspiring story behind its origin.

Aquila, a determined and socially conscious young girl with aspirations of studying law, envisioned a scholarship that would not only support her dreams, but open doors for others.

With the strong backing of her parents, Victor and Ama Beausoleil, her dream has taken shape in a way that has impressed both academia and the philanthropic community.

“This isn’t just a scholarship. It’s a signal of a new era where young voices are not only heard but are actively shaping the future of education,” said Dean of the Faculty of Law, Julia Selman Ayetey.

“Aquila’s passion and the generosity of her family are setting a precedent that will hopefully inspire more young change makers across Africa.”

The scholarship aims to alleviate financial barriers for brilliant yet underserved students who wish to pursue legal studies at UCC. But more broadly, it embodies a set of values rooted in community development, intergenerational empowerment, and equitable access to education.

On its website, the Faculty hailed the initiative as “groundbreaking,” noting its potential to drive enrolment, diversity, and academic excellence.

The initiative’s holistic design also promotes civic engagement, mentorship, and professional networking opportunities for beneficiaries.

“This is how transformation begins,” said Alexander Hackman-Aidoo, who played a key facilitation role in the agreement.

“When a young girl dares to dream, and that dream is met with the support of a family and institution ready to build bridges, lives are changed.”

The scholarship also draws strength from African philosophical thought. The proverb “Fast alone, or far together” was cited by the faculty as a guiding principle for the initiative, a reminder that collective effort is essential to lasting impact.

As the Aquila Beausoleil-UCC Law Scholarship opens its doors to future legal minds, it stands not just as a financial resource, but as a story of vision, family, and the boundless potential of youth to lead change.
