John Ntim Fordjour, a ranking member of the Defence and Interior Committees in Parliament, has called for full disclosure and a thorough investigation into two flights that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in Ghana under “seriously suspicious circumstances”.)

According to Fordjour, intelligence sources indicate that an air ambulance and a private jet arrived at KIA on March 12, originating from Gran Canaria, Spain—a location known for drug trafficking and money laundering activities.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (2 April), he emphasized that the flights remained in the country for an unusually extended period before departing back to Spain.

“The air ambulance arrived at 2:30 AM on 20 March and stayed for five days. When it departed at 1 AM on 25 March, there was no evidence of a patient being medevacked,” Fordjour stated.

He described the flight’s presence in Ghana without an apparent medical emergency as highly questionable. The second flight, which also arrived from Gran Canaria, remained in the country for 13 days before returning.

Given the background of Gran Canaria and its reputation in illicit activities, Fordjour insists that Ghana’s National Security Services must provide clarity on the purpose of these flights.

“It is important that national security and relevant agencies provide detailed information about what exactly the planes carried, if they took anything out, and whether any illicit cargo was involved. These are legitimate concerns that should not be withheld from the public,” he asserted.

In response to the Minority Caucus’ demand for an investigation, President John Mahama swiftly directed the Narcotics Control Commission, the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the National Intelligence Bureau, and the National Security Coordinator to probe the matter.

He assured the public that his administration takes all allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering seriously.

While Fordjour acknowledged the president’s response, he stressed that the matter would only be resolved when a transparent and conclusive investigation is conducted.

“The response was quick, but more important is the conclusion of the matter. The public must be assured that Ghana is not becoming a hub for illicit activities,” he noted.

Addressing criticisms that his statements might be “guilt by association” due to the flights’ origin, Fordjour defended his stance.

“There are many issues happening around private jets and air ambulances. Within just three months, we have witnessed an alarming increase in drug-related arrests. National Security must clear the air and assure the public that Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and secure nation is not being compromised.”

“If there is nothing to hide, why the delay in providing answers?” Fordjour questioned, adding that any attempts to silence or intimidate those raising concerns will not succeed.
