Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah (MP), has announced the Ministry’s initiative to improve road safety at six key intersections within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).
This initiative is part of the Ghana Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (GUMAP), a significant project supported by a $6 million USD grant from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
Addressing the Urban Mobility Forum held at Alisa Hotel, Accra yesterday, the minister averred that the intersections identified for these safety improvements include: Baba Yara Padmore Street Intersection within the Tema Metropolis, Otublohum Obibini Street Intersection in the Accra Metropolis, Ashongman Alafia Intersection in the Ga East Municipality, Three Junction in the Ga West Municipality, Mambo Junction in the Ga Central Municipality, Ogbojo New Market Junction in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality.
The Minister highlighted that the contracts for the implementation of these measures are expected to be awarded in the coming weeks.
He emphasized that these improvements aim to enhance road safety for all users and test the applicability of findings from various studies conducted under GUMAP.
This announcement forms part of the broader efforts of the Ministry to address the challenges of urban mobility and accessibility in Accra, which have been exacerbated by rapid urbanization and population growth.
The Urban Mobility Forum provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights and ideas, fostering sustainability in urban mobility and accessibility within GAMA.
Stakeholders and interested parties are encouraged to engage with the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives and participate in upcoming forums.
