The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has called on managers of children’s homes and orphanages to partner the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat to ensure that the brilliant and needy as well as deserving students among them secure scholarships to pursue their dreams.
According to the Second Lady, the Secretariat, which has been given a major facelift by President Akufo-Addo after assuming power in 2017, is ready to take the children on board and help them.
She said this on Friday when she presented some books to the Country-side Children’s Welfare Home at Awutu Bawjiase in the central region as part of her SEHP Library-in – a box project to mark this year’s World Book Day.
“I am very touched by your story. I will like to say that you should work closely with the Scholarships Secretariat, because these are the kind of children the Secretariat will like to be helping to go forward,” the Second Lady said.
She said, as Second Lady, she will also use her office to make sure that the children get a better future.
Samira Bawumia also commended the managers of the Home for providing shelter to the destitute children.
“To be able to do this means you have a big heart and the fear of God in you,” she said.
For his part, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, George Nenyi Andah asked the people to adhere to the measures put in place by President Akufo-Addo to combat the disease.
“We should observe the social distancing and most importantly wash our hands frequently. We should also as quickly as possible visit a health facility when we show any symptoms of covid 19,” he said.
World Book Day
This year, World Book Day, which fell on April 23, was on the theme ‘share a million stories.’ The day is also acknowledged globally in over 100 countries across the world.
The day is a celebration of everything books – from the authors and illustrators to the children who read them.
Children of all ages come together to celebrate reading – having the chance to dress up as their favourite literary character on the day.
The aim is to encourage more children to discover the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
