The atmosphere was electric with empathy as thousands of Ghanaians assembled at the Independence Square on the night of August 2, 2025, to honour the late music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.

This candlelight vigil was a poignant tribute to one of the country’s most cherished artists, whose melodies have resonated with generations.

Daddy Lumba died at The Bank Hospital, located in Cantonments, Accra, in the early morning hours of July 26, 2025. Before his death, he had been unwell and had suffered from an undisclosed health issue for over fifteen years.

Participants, predominantly dressed in black, illuminated the square with flickering candles as they reminisced about Daddy Lumba’s influence on Ghana’s music scene.

There was an outpouring of tributes, poetry recitals, choral performances and other performances to celebrate the fallen music giant on the night.

The air was filled with the sounds of his timeless hits, with many singing along to classics that have become anthems of love and life in Ghana.

The vigil served not only as a memorial but also as a celebration of his artistic legacy that continues to inspire many.

As mourners shared stories and memories, the emotional weight of the night was palpable.

Daddy Lumba’s contributions to the music industry have left an indelible mark, with his songs often reflecting the joys and struggles of everyday life in Ghana. The gathering was a testament to the deep connection he forged with fans, who cherished his music as a soundtrack to their lives.

The candlelight vigil is part of a series of planned commemorative events aimed at celebrating Daddy Lumba’s life and legacy.

As one of Ghana’s most influential artists, his work transcended mere entertainment; it spoke to the heart of the Ghanaian experience.

His songs, over 200 records, often addressed themes of love, resilience, and cultural pride, cementing his status as a national treasure.
