President John Dramani Mahama has warmly welcomed Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang back to Ghana after a period of medical treatment abroad, calling her recovery a national triumph and a blow to ill-wishers.
At the Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, President Mahama joined a delegation of top government officials, clergy, and family to receive the Vice President. Expressing deep gratitude and relief, he described her return as “a special day for Ghana,” noting the disappointment of those who harbored ill intentions during her illness.
“The prophets who emerged during your illness may be satisfied now, and those who wished you harm are surely disappointed,” the President remarked.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang fell ill on March 28, 2025, and was initially treated at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) before being flown abroad for advanced care. Her return follows weeks of public concern and speculation.
President Mahama praised the nation’s outpouring of prayers and support, joking that her absence even made his own brief trip abroad controversial. “They almost impeached me for going to Togo,” he laughed, adding, “So I’m the most excited to have you back.”
He also noted that doctors said she looked “20 years younger,” though they advised her to take things slowly.
Reflecting on the situation, Mahama highlighted the limitations of Ghana’s health infrastructure. While UGMC played a vital early role, he emphasized the need to fully realize the hospital’s potential. “We must complete UGMC as envisioned by Professor Mills so that such emergencies can be managed here at home,” he urged.
In her brief remarks, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang thanked Ghanaians for their prayers and goodwill. She expressed appreciation to her medical team, both in Ghana and abroad, and to President Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama for their unwavering support.
Her recovery and return come at a crucial time as Ghana gears up for the December 2024 elections and continues efforts to strengthen its healthcare system.
