The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly rejected calls for a rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, insisting that their candidate, Akua Afriyie, won the December 7, 2024 parliamentary polls.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, addressing the media at the party’s parliamentary candidate office in Accra, yesterday, stated that they possess “undeniable evidence” proving their victory.
“We have our undeniable evidence to clearly show that we won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election,” Kodua said, asserting that “Under no circumstances will we be intimidated. Under no circumstance will we be coerced to go for a rerun.” The party reaffirmed its position, insisting that they secured a legitimate victory and would not accept any attempt to overturn the outcome.
The Ablekuma North parliamentary election has been marred by disputes over collation and legal challenges. The Electoral Commission (EC) had initially declared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Awurabena Aubynn, as the winner. However, the NPP contested the results, citing discrepancies in the vote count.
According to reports, the NPP’s Akua Afriyie won with 34,613 votes, beating the NDC’s Awurabena Aubynn, who polled 34,199 votes, resulting in a margin of 414 votes. The EC’s decision to rerun polls in 19 polling stations has further complicated the issue, with the NPP insisting that they will not participate in any rerun.
The NPP is calling on the EC to comply with a court directive to conclude the collation process and officially declare Akua Afriyie as the Member of Parliament-elect. “We will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections. What we are asking the Electoral Commission is to follow the court directive, finish the collation, and declare our candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the MP-elect for Ablekuma North,” Kodua noted.
Despite the NPP’s stance, the EC has announced plans to rerun polls in 19 polling stations on July 11, 2025, in an attempt to resolve the impasse. The outcome of this rerun will determine the final results of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
